This region is no stranger to tough times, but our story is one of remarkable economic and environmental transformation.  The lesson is that challenges can be met and overcome.  We have created a well-balanced and diversified economy, in which the private sector continues to invest and create new jobs.  We also invest in our workforce, giving our residents the skills they need to compete for 21^st Century jobs.  And, we continue to push the boundaries of technology and innovation by taking advantage of our world-class research universities and medical institutions.
